Tutorial: How to Sew a Buckle on a Belt
This tutorial will teach you how to attach a belt buckle with a prong to a belt. You don’t need any special equipment for this tutorial and it’s great for beginners or people with any amount of sewing experience. This is mainly meant to attach buckles to DIY fabric belts, but the same principles can be used to repair and attach a buckle to any type of belt.

Supplies Needed:
Step 1
Trim Back the Belting from the end of the belt
If you used webbing or belting when sewing your belt, pull back the fabric and cut off about 1.5 inches
Step 2
Poke a hole in the belt
Using an awl (or sharp, pointy tool) poke a hole in the belt about 1.5 inches in from the end (or at the edge of the belting inside so that the hole does NOT go through the belting). Make sure it is centered along the width belt.
Step 3
Insert the Belt prong through the hole
Make sure when inserting the prong that the belt is facing the correct direction. The prong should sit flat on the front of the belt. If you are using a belt buckle where the prong is in the center, insert the belt underneath one side and over the middle (pictured below).
Step 4
Fold over the back of the belt and hand-sew closed
Go over the hand-sewn edges twice to give it extra security and make sure the belt buckle is won’t come loose. If you are using a buckle with a center prong, fold over the fabric so that it nestles inside the edge of the belt (this will prevent the belt buckle from sticking out and looking bulky.
And that’s all! You’ve completed the finished belt buckle!
